Asian Cup ‘Cho Gue-sung’s Last Goal Scored During Regular Time in Korean Soccer History’
Headed equalizer in the 9th minute of added time in the second half… 2 minutes behind the previous record
Cho Gue-sung’s (Midtjylland) headed goal,
which saved Klinsmann from the risk of being eliminated from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup,
was recorded in Korean soccer history as a ‘theatrical goal’ that came at the very end of regular time.
According to the Korea Football Association, Cho Gue-sung’s goal, which came just before the end of the second half of the round of 16 match against Saudi Arabia held at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on the 31st (Korean time),
was the latest in the history of Korea’s A-match when considering only regular time excluding extra time.

In the 9th minute of added time in the second half, when the team was down 0-1 and losing heavily,
Cho Gue-sung headed a pass to Seol Young-woo again to open Saudi Arabia’s goal.
Thanks to this, the national team avoided defeat and dramatically advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament by beating Saudi Arabia 4-2 in a penalty shootout.
Kim Chi-woo (retired) scored the tying goal to make it 1-1 in the 7th minute of added time in the second half of the 2014 FIFA Brazil World Cup Asian Final Qualifying Match against Lebanon held in Beirut, Lebanon in June 2013,
which was the last goal previously scored.
At the time, the national team led by former coach Choi Kang-hee drew 1-1 with Lebanon.
Cho Gue-sung, who repaid Coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s faith with a golden score against Saudi Arabia,
set this record back by about two minutes.
Including overtime, the last goal scored came at the 2011 Qatar Asian Cup.
At that time, in the semifinal against Japan, Hwang Jae-won (retired) scored the tying goal to make it 2-2 in the 15th minute of extra time.
Korea dramatically brought the game back to square one at the last minute, but Koo Ja-cheol (Jeju),
Lee Yong-rae (Daegu), and Hong Jeong-ho (Jeonbuk) missed in the penalty shoot-out,
losing 0-3, and their advance to the finals was thwarted.
In a game that was played for only 90 minutes in the first and second halves without overtime,
the last game in which the Korean national team conceded a goal was in the third match of Group E against Malaysia held on the 25th.
The national team was unable to maintain a 3-2 lead in the final minute against Malaysia,
led by Coach Kim Pang-gon, and allowed the score to be tied in the 15th minute of extra time in the second half, earning only 1 point.
