China tells citizens not to gamble in Singapore Korea

China issued a WeChat social media post through the Singapore embassy on Monday, warning Chinese citizens to “stay away from gambling” while in the city-state. Singapore has dual-exclusive casino markets and other limited forms of legal betting.

The Chinese message translates as: “Even if casino facilities are legally set up outside mainland China’s borders, citizens may be in violation of our country’s laws against participating in cross-border gambling, especially in organizing gambling… It could make them liable legally for their actions.”

The embassy message referred to China’s revised criminal law, which made it illegal to organize mainland Chinese citizens to gamble abroad. It came into force on March 1, 2021.

In a WeChat post on Monday, the embassy provided the Chinese safety ministry’s contact information for the public, who want mainland Chinese residents to submit “secret” for all actions related to organizing fellow citizens to gamble abroad.

Over the past few years, many of China’s government departments have made statements about cracking down on citizens traveling abroad for casino play or engaging in online betting. This is called “cross-border gambling.”

On Feb. 27, the Chinese Embassy in Seoul, Korea, issued a WeChat post with a similar warning to mainland residents traveling to Korea. The country has an extensive casino industry, where only one place, Kangwon Land, can serve its citizens.

The Seoul Embassy said it learned of a case of Chinese people losing “huge” property at a Korean casino.
