A large number of players who played in the Summer Universiade and the 2023 KOVO Cup in Chengdu, China, were included earlier this month. Park Seung-soo OK Savings Bank, Jung Tae-joon Hyundai Capital, and Lee Yoon-soo Gyeonggi University participated in the Summer Universiade, while Park Seung-soo, Jung Tae-joon, Lee Joon Korean Air, Shin Seung-hoon KB Insurance, and Jang Ji-won Hankook Electric Power participated in the KOVO Cup.
Among college players, Cho Jin-seok a senior at Kyunghee University, who is 216 centimeters tall and the longest in the history of Korean volleyball, will make his first appearance with the Taegeuk mark. Cho Jin-seok said, I’m very grateful to participate in a meaningful international competition, adding, I can think of it as a friendly competition, but I want to beat strong teams. I feel burdened by the title of being the tallest in the history of domestic volleyball, but I will try to overcome it, he said. I will make up for the shortcomings and use it as an opportunity to grow further through this tournament.
Park Ye-chan Kyung Hee University also said, It is a great honor to play with overseas players at an international competition held in Korea after playing only with Korean players, adding, I am even more excited to experience the volleyball style and skills of overseas teams. Yang Soo-hyun Gyeonggi University also said, We will do our best to win the Korea-Japan match, which is the opening game,” adding, We would appreciate it if fans watched a lot of TV broadcasts and came to the stadium to cheer for us.
South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, China, Thailand and Vietnam will participate in the competition. In the group preliminary round, Group A was composed of South Korea, Japan, China, and Thailand, while Group B was composed of the United States, Britain, Australia, and Vietnam. UC Irvine, ranked eighth among 57 NCAA National University Sports Association teams representing the U.S., is conducting joint training with Hyundai Capital.
SBS SPORTS, a sports channel, will broadcast live major games, including the opening match between Korea and Japan at 2 p.m. on the 26th.
