Ontarioites demand ban on sports betting ads

Ontario people are already fed up with the boom in sports betting advertising in the state, and the playoff game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers made it worse. Adults in the state are worried about the potential impact on teenagers as sporting events are flooded with sports gambling ads that are often advertised by popular players or celebrities.

In April 2022, Ontario made history by introducing an open iGaming market for third-party operators that attracted much of the industry’s attention. The expansion of local industries has led to a significant increase in advertising across all kinds of media. There has been increasing concern that the abundance of advertising can be a problem.

Carl Subban, the father of three NHL players and hockey coach, is also against advertising. He said gambling is a big problem because it can be addictive. He said a lot of marketing is focused on attracting the eyes of the most vulnerable, the youngest population. That’s why I’m advocating banning sports betting ads in the market.

Mr. Subban is participating in the anti-gambling. The website says it wants to ban all advertisements for game ads. It is argued that the damage caused by gambling can include financial problems, stress on families, teenagers and children, and mental health problems such as addiction and even suicide. These are just some of the negative effects that Canadians can develop.

The group is alarmed by the inclusion of celebrities and athletes in advertisements that can be dangerous to children. Mr. Subban said that these kinds of advertisements are attracting children’s attention, and according to him, they can have a detrimental effect on them because they can influence them to realize their potential and achieve their dreams.

Sylvia Cairouz, a professor at Concordia University, supports the theory that gambling advertising could be a problem. In her research, she found that such advertisements influence people’s behavior. She said they force people to gamble and, in some cases, make them gamble much more. She added that the introduction of the iGaming market has provided a platform for much easier access for addicts.

Ontario’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission, which regulated the online gambling market, has already taken some steps to protect consumers. Last month, regulators introduced legislation that would ban professional players from participating in gambling ads if passed. AGCO said it will hear from the proposal by May 8, 2023.

In early April 2023, Ontario marked its one-year anniversary of the introduction of its online gambling model. AGCO subsidiary iGaming Ontario says locals bet more than C$35.6 billion in the first 12 months, converting it to C$1.4 billion in revenue. Meanwhile, the average monthly net expenditure for active player accounts was approximately C$70.
