South Korea’s resort island of Jeju has implemented new entry measures for casinos since last weekend, asking customers for proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a valid negative COVID-19 test. The information was confirmed to GGRAsia by a local government official on Friday.
The new rules enacted on Saturday (18 December) will be in effect until at least 2 January.
Previously, in order to access casinos in Jeju, game users did not have to present proof of vaccination completion or a valid negative COVID-19 test.
The Jeju government is semi-autonomous and has a regulatory system for foreigner-only casinos specialized in Jeju Island.
The latest rule is a measure introduced from Nov. 1 that keeps the casino capacity limit at 50% of its usual capacity. There are currently no restrictions on the operating schedule of casinos in the Jeju area.
Jeju’s new measures were in line with the central government restoring its strengthened COVID-19 prevention policy from Saturday after a surge in new infections across the country.
Currently, only three of the eight foreigner-only casinos in Jeju are open. They are the landing casino of Jeju Shinhwa World (file photo), the real estate of Hong Kong-listed Landing International Development Co., Ltd., the Jeju Dream Tower Casino operated by Lotte Tour Development Co., Ltd., and the Paradise Casino Grand Jeju operated by Paradise, listed on the Korea Exchange.
Representatives of the three casinos in operation confirmed Sunday that they were officially notified of the new rules by Jeju Island.
A representative at Landing Casino told GGRAsia on Friday that the average daily number of guests at the property recently fell below the maximum allowed.
As of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jeju had 36 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 4,460, including 13 deaths, according to the city of Jeju.
